Unfortunately, the Dutch national team left the world cup pretty early. Still, the Netherlands has brought forth legendary players – and amazing national clubs! Did you know the Netherlands actually won the European Championship in 1988? We didn’t, till now – mostly because we weren’t around to actually see it happening! 5. Sparta Rotterdam
Sparta Rotterdam is from Rotterdam (obviously) and is a professional club. It came into existence in 1888, making it the oldest paid club in the Netherlands.
4. HVV Den Haag
HVV is in the Hague, and a part of the Royal HC & V, founded in 1883 – making it one of the oldest still existing soccer clubs in the country!
3. Feyenoord Rotterdam
Feyenoord is the most well-known club from Rotterdam, and a professional one in the highest league too. The club was founded in the year 1908 and the stadium-club is often called the ‘club of the people’.

2. PSV Eindhoven
Interesting for expats in Eindhoven and surrounding places: PSV stands for Philips Sport Vereniging! Originally, this was indeed the sports club for Philips employees. Who would have thought it would become one of the best professional soccer clubs of the Netherlands? PSV was founded on the 31st of August, in 1913.
5. Ajax Amsterdam
Amsterdamsche Football Club Ajax, AFC Ajax or just Ajax: this club is without a shadow of a doubt the best professional club in the Netherlands! The club was founded in 1900, and is considered one of the three premium clubs in Holland. Ajax has never dropped from the highest league since it started playing!

Did you know our national soccer team is called ‘Oranje’? This is nickname referring to the orange tenue, which is a reference to the Dutch Royals – whose family name is Oranje-Nassau. In 2011 the team reached the 1st place on the ranglijst of FIFA and the eleven national players generally play their home matches in the Dutch cities of Eindhoven, Rotterdam and Amsterdam.
Some of the best soccer players from the Netherlands include Patrick Kluivert, Johan Cruyff, Ruud Gullit, Clarence Seedorf, Jaap Stam, Frank Rijkaard and of course Arjen Robben. These and other players not mentioned are considered legends and national treasures!
